AutoCAD has seen an evolution in design that has increased its capabilities. Although there have been some changes, the application’s basic purpose remains unchanged: to ease the tedious task of drafting.

The two most significant changes to the original AutoCAD’s 2D drafting software design are the introduction of multi-window capability (AutoCAD 2003) and the ability to plot on more than just paper (AutoCAD 2004). The multi-window feature allowed several drawings to be displayed within a single window. The capability to plot on both paper and large area screens enabled users to plot plans and designs on paper and also on large area screens.

Although these were major design changes, there have also been some changes to the application’s basic functions that have expanded its capabilities. These include:

AutoCAD made it possible to draw CAD objects from other objects within the software. For example, a table within the design could be modified to a CAD object. This allowed the design of a large complex object with minimal change to the shape and size of the original object.

AutoCAD made it possible to link the drawing with other information, such as user comments, notes, and contacts.

The user was able to alter, modify, and save the drawing as many times as needed.

Some time after AutoCAD 2010, the company, under the leadership of David Gildea, began phasing out development of the AutoCAD line. On July 31, 2012, Autodesk announced that they were discontinuing the Autodesk AutoCAD product line, with the exception of AutoCAD LT, 3D Architectural Desktop and Architecture. Some users were hopeful that a new company would take over AutoCAD development, but those hopes proved to be unrealistic. Despite Autodesk’s claims that they would continue supporting AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT for the foreseeable future, AutoCAD LT’s last feature update in August 2016 and AutoCAD LT Pro (which incorporates the latter) was the last updates for that version. AutoCAD LT – last Autodesk product developed using AutoLISP – was the only Autodesk product that was completely produced using AutoLISP and complied with the definition of a Lisp Machine. AutoCAD LT had the original 64-bit AutoLISP interpreter on the first 5,000 systems. With version 6, the interpreter was replaced with the 64-bit implementation of the AutoLISP 2003 standard. Autodesk released a 64-bit version of AutoCAD in 2014, and thus is no longer using AutoLISP, although it still supports AutoLISP for the Macro language. The object and script language was revamped in 2014, and is now available in multiple object and script languages as well as Javascript.

AutoCAD LT 2015–2016 is still supported by Autodesk. From 2018, support for AutoCAD LT 2013–2016 and for AutoCAD 2017 was dropped.
