This book is like a book about books.

Start with a prologue. A prologue that, at the same time, explains and begs forgiveness. Who is this book’s accused? His name is James Bowman and this is his story.

Never before or since have I seen a novel follow its author around to all the places he’s been. It’s like the writer on tour, dropping in to tell us what he looks like now and what he feels like now. He ends every chapter on a place where he has spent time, and remembers as a slip of paper in the drawer of a desk, one of those trinkets people have tacked around their apartment so they can then stumble outside and remember it with a kind of awe, as if they’ve seen something the rest of us know only from photographs. We are on safari as Jonathan Safran Foer tells us his safari started on Mount Everest, he crossed the Outer Hebrides, was on a tour bus with Crazy Horse, witnessed chemical warfare in Okinawa and shelled the Khari Baisha refugee camp in Syria; on the road to Petra, where he lugged heavy suitcases of earth with his hands.

He visited places I know only from the covers, the covers of other books, Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey (“Its desolate beauty was amazing,” he writes, “and somehow I felt humbled by the enormous mystery.”) he climbed Mount Kilimanjaro (and discovers the “leafy canopy… [shocked] at how green the canopy seemed compared to the dry and gray landscape. The view knocked the breath out of me.”) he investigated the history of water pollution, and traveled through India to photograph a river and its water for the Chorus of the title, its name comes from the Zoroastrians’ belief that at the moment of The All-Clear, they say, the world is filled with water. The All-Clear is when the world is cleansed of impurity (the universe is a monster, nothing wrong with that) and then there’s all this water. “The water is Niagara,” he writes of India. “It’s so blue and fresh and clean.” He opens his notebook and draws a picture of the river,
