The world on the surface of this planet is so vast and unexplored that there are entire areas of it that remain completely uncolonized. It is this vastness of land that creates some of the most intriguing puzzles in Starseed Pilgrim – especially in the early and mid game, when you may be getting lost for hours in your first playthrough, going back to previous areas to double-check your progress. Journey is broken up in segments throughout the game, with the player often having to trek across desolate countryside to reach an unmapped area. The story unfolds in a sequential fashion, as the mapmaker must make a journey to the centre of the planet, in order to answer a request to help in the colonization of the planet below.

While Starseed Pilgrim, as a game, is primarily a story-driven experience, its design is extremely unique: it took a relatively small team of five people only about 8 months to make this game, and many consider this the result of a truly independent game. The developers used several independent tools for the game, using a custom programming language to create the game, an internal static code-compiler to create the game files, and a custom Unity engine to present the game’s 3D graphics. This means that a few of the game’s features can’t be easily implemented by other game engines: for example, there is no direct interaction between maps, since they are stored as individual files.
