Back in the 1980s, the personal computer revolution began, ushering the end of the typewriter and the start of the era of PCs. When the first microcomputer was unveiled, it was small, had nearly no functionality (yet!), and ran fast even compared to other computers of the time (for example, the Apple II computer could only handle 640×200 resolution). But it soon started taking over the world (and our businesses) and in the course of time, as the organization demanded more and more computing power, it produced not only personal computers but also high-end workstations, servers, storage peripherals, and hundreds of other devices.

The emergence of the new multimedia technology, high-resolutions image processing, and the advent of new frames and extra-large screens made the 16-bit hardware not enough for today’s computing. Here we see IBM’s XT-family, the PC XT and the XT2, the company’s main platform for late 1990s (and early 2000s). The XT desktop PC was officially introduced in 1988, while the XT2 line started appearing in 1993 (as did AMD’s similar but modified AM386).

The width of the additional frame (or “case”), that is, the depth of the machine, has increased. Supposedly, an original XT computer (with the standard depth of 19.5 mm) had a horizontal monitor of 60×25 cm and a printer of 90×93 cm. For comparison, the current high-end PC includes a monitor of at least 25” (25.4” widescreen, 18:9 aspect ratio) and a printer of at least 48” by 27” (42” widescreen, 16:9 aspect ratio). Even if none of these things are available in an XT-family computer nowadays, the potential connected devices are a lot wider than before.

Most of the devices you would like to connect were produced after the year 2000, with the exception of certain very high-resolutions printers and a few very low-end graphics cards. For example, the P3000 graphics card, although it does not offer very high performance, appeared only in late 2000 and can therefore be considered to be a post-2000 computer graphics chip.
