Photoshop is available in both basic and full versions for Windows and Mac. For Windows users, you need to download and install the current version using the link at the top of this book’s web page. For Mac users, you must download the current version from Adobe.com.

Understanding the Photoshop Workflow

The various stages of a Photoshop-created image are as follows:

Background (negative) layer: The background of your image is one of the layers in a document. This layer has no content — it is transparent, so you can insert other layers onto it.

Undeletable layers: Any layers that have content other than the background layer are not clickable. They aren’t deletable because they can’t be moved or adjusted.

Layers that have content: Photoshop refers to layers with content as “non-selectable” layers. They are clickable and can be grouped and moved.

Other layers: There are any number of layers that don’t have content in them. These are non-selectable, non-clickable layers.

Media layers: The layer that contains the media that you insert into your image is one of many layers that will become part of your image.

Why would you use layers in this way? It enables you to create multiple edits without destroying what you have already done. Any changes you make to a layer are not applied until after the layer has been applied in your image.

In Figure 1-1, the image is being created layer by layer. The first three layers of this workflow are background, dark background, and light background. The small black circles are dashes for the layer mask. The layer mask is controlling where the edges of the image are visible.

Using the Layers panel and the Layer menu

To create new layers, you can use the Layers panel or the Layer menu. You can use the Layers panel for projects where you want to edit an image layer by layer as shown in Figure 1-2. For layered projects, Photoshop stores information about the layers by using the Layers panel.

As is well known in the dental field, root planing and cleaning and shaping procedures are typically accomplished by first applying an appropriate cleaning or shaping solution or gel to a rotary or reciprocating tool such as a dental scaler, burs or curette. Such root planing and cleaning and shaping solutions or gels are generally supplied in a glass tube or bottle and dispensed by a spray means such as a dental syringe. The handpiece is generally placed within the patient’s mouth and the high pressure of the water driven or air driven handpiece is discharged onto the work site with the resulting solution or gel being delivered at a high rate of velocity and pressure into the interproximal region between the adjacent teeth. Thereafter, by operating the handpiece the dental practitioner can brush, scrape or otherwise mechanically erode or abrade the rough surfaces of the adjacent teeth, thereby removing plaque and other debris as well as diseased tissue and gum from the interproximal region or root surfaces of the adjacent teeth.
In the course of performing such an interproximal cleaning or root shaping procedure, however, it has been found that when the handpiece is operated during the procedure, the practitioner often inadvertently sustains abrasive injuries due to contamination or dirt on the handpiece. The handpiece is regularly wiped with a towel prior to continued use, but often some of the particulate debris or abrasive remains on the surface of the handpiece can be transmitted to the patient’s mouth during this procedure.
