Referencing variables inside of the function definition

I was just messing around with Python, and I got a question for you guys.
Consider this code:
def myFunc():
global x
x = 10
print(x)

a = 1
b = 2

myFunc()

I would have expected that the output will be 11, but it ends up printing nothing. I believe the issue is with the global statement. If I remove it, the code would output 10.
However, I do not know if my understanding of global variables is correct. Can someone explain it to me? Thanks.

That’s right. Remove the global keyword and add some print statement inside myFunc() – it will output the number 10. You mentioned you get the number 11 if you omit the global keyword, but there’s a difference between variable and function scope.
If you make myFunc() as global-scoped you will get 11 as well:
def myFunc():
global x
x = 10
print(x)

a = 1
b = 2

myFunc()

If you refer to functions from another context, then there’s no way to know what’s the global scope. So you can’t access x in your function myFunc() from outside (e.g. b = myFunc()). You need to explicitly write global x, as you did.

You’re correct that variable scope is not consistent with function scope. A given name refers to the same object in both cases, but a name in function scope does not refer to the same object as a name in global scope.
In your example, “x” refers to the variable in the global scope, so it’s not defined in the function. Adding the global keyword does not change this.
