I was able to create a filter within OpenNI to display a 3D model within a software renderer based on the player’s accelerometer data and movement through a virtual corridor.

The OpenNI interface on the PC behaves differently from the Android as follows:

1. The Android OpenNI Interface
The Android OpenNI interface is a low-level interface for using the image/video sensors and interfacing with the camera. It is like a subset of the Wii Nunchuk.

This means that a controller can control the whole sensor (image and video) and not only the displayed video within the “onscreen” view.

To use OpenNI, you must send a handshake to the camera after it has connected. This handshake is not specific to the Android. It is just the proper signal to the camera to start streaming.

2. The OpenNI Interface on PC
There are no plugins for the OpenNI interface on the PC. There is a Skype package for the PC but that is just for the microphone. Using OpenNI is very simple on PC.

First, you must change the camera image size to match the image/video size expected by OpenNI.

Then you just open the stream and your camera will stream the image in real time and update the screen.

You can use OpenNI in Android apps or Windows apps.

There are two ways to send a handshake: One is to call the OpenNI API (in Windows) and the other is to send a packet manually.

In the OpenNI API, you send a header immediately before the image/video stream. This header is type 10 and its value contains either a three-byte length of the image/video stream, or a two-byte stream ID depending on the application.
