Originally introduced as the predecessor to AutoCAD LT, AutoCAD is now available as both an electronic (desktop) and mobile (tablet/smartphone) version. AutoCAD currently is available for Windows, macOS, and Windows RT/8, and is priced according to a user’s needs and AutoCAD features desired. In 2013, there were more than 25,000 AutoCAD users, with AutoCAD users surpassing 9.7 million in 2017.[2][3]

AutoCAD software is used by architects, engineers, drafters, and many others to create detailed drawings and maps for use in the construction of buildings, bridges, and other projects. Since its first release, AutoCAD was the world’s leading 2D CAD application for desktop computers. AutoCAD software has also expanded to mobile and web apps. AutoCAD software is an alternative to other 2D CAD programs such as Microsoft Powerpoint or Google Docs. A few users draw with AutoCAD and publish the drawings as PDF documents.

History

AutoCAD evolved from a program called “Auto Draft”, which was developed in 1977 by Rod Grimes and David Eberly. This application was designed to work on the Hewlett-Packard HP-3000 series of minicomputers.[4] Later, as the computer department of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Rod Grimes and David Eberly created a noncommercial version of Auto Draft for the HP-2100 series of minicomputers. This version was called “HP CAD/Draft” and was sold to Hewlett-Packard in 1980.[4] A year later, the original developers left Hewlett-Packard and began work on a new program named AutoCAD.[5]

AutoCAD 2.0 was released in 1982.[6] Version 2.0 added three-dimensional (3D) capability and was published by Hewlett-Packard and AutoDesk, Inc.[7] Early versions of AutoCAD included the workbenches, plotters and other design tools.[8] By the late 1980s, AutoCAD software was used in numerous projects including the construction of nuclear power plants.[9]

After the release of AutoCAD 3D, AutoDesk began to develop its own CAD software that would be sold along with the AutoCAD 3D application. AutoCAD 3D was first marketed as AutoCAD 3D (1992), and was later renamed
