History

AutoCAD was developed at the start of CAD history, with the first releases of 1.0 in 1987. It is related to other CAD programs in the early days, most notably HPGL. At the time of its introduction, AutoCAD was well regarded and “received a favorable response” from the press, which described the program as “fantastic”.

On July 10, 1992, AutoCAD XL was released as the first release of AutoCAD for Macintosh. This release was discontinued in 2002, and the product was rebranded to AutoCAD LT and then back to AutoCAD in 2010. AutoCAD’s first non-Windows release was Autodesk’s first commercial CAD program, Intergraph’s ArchiCAD. AutoCAD was originally based on Intergraph’s ArchiCAD code-base.

Originally, AutoCAD was based on Intergraph’s DXF file format, which was a limitation for dynamic importing and exporting of data into other AutoCAD programs or other CAD programs. DXF is a proprietary format that is mostly used by AutoCAD, and not by other CAD systems. It was originally used for most, if not all, of the company’s products, and is still used by certain projects (such as IPE and Autodesk’s 123D).

Because DXF file format is so limiting, the company created an XML-based interchange format, called Extensible Markup Language (XML), to allow for data interchange in CAD systems. The XML format was also adopted by other CAD software companies. The first released version of XML was XML Data Formats, which was not the same as XML, but was based on it. With the release of AutoCAD 2006, AutoCAD adopted XML in the file format standard, thereby removing its reliance on DXF. Now, DXF is used for interoperability between CAD systems and is mostly used for labeling and for printing out. XML is used for exchanging data between applications.
