How to speed up https requests via php

I have a website that is served out of PHP code. It makes https requests to a web service (to authenticate in order to access other web services on the system).
The way I’m making the https requests is simple: I get the url using $_SERVER[‘SERVER_PROTOCOL’], and then use file_get_contents() to make the request.
This works fine, but I can’t think of a reasonable way to handle concurrent access, or maintain session state when the user has multiple browser windows open. For example, the user loads the website, starts doing something else, then comes back to the website and is presented with login forms for things she’s already done.
