Arthur Elvin

Arthur Elvin, (19 October 1880 – 6 July 1963) was a London-born South African-born British palaeobotanist. He took part in the First and Second Opinions on the killing of the dinosaurs of South Africa in 1895 and led the expedition to the Lake Nyasa region in 1914 where plant fossils were first discovered. His published works included works on prehistoric flora. He also gathered specimens of Victorian flora and fauna to study and to repatriate them to their original homes.

Early years

Elvin was born in London, England on 19 October 1880. He was educated at King’s College School, Wimbledon, and later at the London School of Medicine for Women where he obtained a diploma of M.B. in 1903. At the school he developed an interest in zoology and botany, and became a friend of Eugenia Gerlach in the autumn of 1902. Elvin was a member of the Cambridge University Geological Society and the British Association for the Advancement of Science.

South Africa

South African survey
In 1904 Elvin went to South Africa where he stayed for four years working in the botany department of the West Rand Museum and in the South African Museum. During this period, in 1904 and 1905, he travelled extensively and became familiar with the country.

In 1910 Elvin discovered the plant fossils of the Lake Nyasa region in the Lewanika area of Zambia. He was led to these sites by the following circumstances:
In the South African Museum there was a very large number of plant fossils that had been collected as late as 1899-1900 in the Lewanika area of Zambia. The fossils had been collected by the Imperial Geological Survey led by Henry Walter John Hutchinson and his colleagues at different times between 1899 and 1900 but they had been placed in storage and were subsequently destroyed by the Germans during the war. In 1912 these plant fossils, many of which were previously unidentified, were sold to the South African Museum for £10.

Between 1904 and 1910 the geologist Harold Harvey had discovered a number of plant fossils in the Makokwe area of the Upper Luangwa valley in Zambia. He sent a number of these to the British Museum in London for identification.

In 1914 Elvin was sent by the South African Museum to examine these specimens. His purpose was to determine which specimens of prehistoric plants he should collect and which specimens belonged to contemporary flora. Elvin
