Q:

Strange Unicode characters after SSH connection to a Linux machine

I am trying to SSH to a remote Linux server and I am getting strange characters which look like boxes, like this :

The problem is that I can’t copy and paste the characters.
However, if I add them to a text document and then open it via vim, they are displayed correctly.
I’ve already checked if the machine is set correctly to UTF8, and the terminal encoding is UTF8 (mostly on remote server).
Here’s what I’ve tried so far :

Rebooting the server
Clearing /tmp
Restarting the ssh daemon
switching to UTF8 in the terminal
starting with –nocompatibility
Checking the terminal type with echo $TERM (gives xterm)

But none of it worked.
Here’s a dump of the strings which looks like the problem :

Injury Table – Roll 1D6. Remove that many from the total target number. The 10 highest (highest are more important) results are removed from the total.
– Remove half (rounded up) of the legs from the total hit points. The sum of the legs can be viewed under the bottom left corner.
Disadvantage/Advantage Table – When rolling for an attack, there is a weight and number of legs. The results of the attack are modified by subtracting the number of legs rolled from the result.
– The number of legs rolled with a Disadvantage roll equals the number of legs from the lowest to the highest in the position on the monstrosity’s left side. So, if it has 12 legs total, the first roll will roll 2 legs. The resulting number is subtracted from the result.
– This rolls the lowest to the highest on the right side of the monstrosity. So, if it has 12 legs total, the first roll will roll 3 legs, etc. If it has 12 legs total it rolls 6 legs.
– Add the number of legs as given in the Disadvantage/Advantage Table to the final roll.
– If the final roll is equal to or less than 10, the result is subtracted from the total hit points.
– If the final roll is more than 10, then the result is added to the total hit points.
– If no legs are rolled with a Disadvantage roll, the hit points are rolled with the number of legs equal to the total hit points. If there are 4 legs rolled, the final result will be +2 (40). If there are 8 legs rolled, the final result will be +4 (48).
Mobility Table – If a monstrosity has fewer than 4 legs, it can only roll 1D6 to move.
– If 4 legs are rolled, then the creature is considered immobile. If immobile, roll the final result as normal.
– If fewer than 8 legs are rolled, the creature must move up to 3 squares as a free action.
– If 8 or more legs are rolled, the creature must move up to 5 squares as a free action.
– The creature can move 2 squares as a free action if it rolls the entire number of legs.
