Our yet to be released X-Plane 11 [Beta – Windows & Mac] includes a brand new audio engine that is capable of supporting a number of I/O sources. These are, in order of reliability: our new DS-5V Thunderbolt ProSound audio device, our new Thunderbolt chipset, USB, the onboard sound chipset and the 3.5mm headphone jack.

In the previous X-Plane (8.1) versions we were limited by a single dedicated 3.5mm headphone jack, that was less precise (sound was easily delayed) and could not be used for mixers etc. 3.5mm headphones worked for headphone only / music playback, and most devices did not offer an easy fix/trick to work with that jack.
Since the release of X-Plane 9.80 we have had this feature implemented across all our platforms. The reason was that the 3.5mm headphone jack seemed to have become a standard feature (at least in the west) and it was time to make sure that our users had a full range of features at their disposal. It was also a happy decision to have the fixed latency and more “immediate” behavior for the real-time audio.
The REALTALK audio kernel now also supports even faster jack detection (trying to guess type of device, even if it is not present), and offers these abilities to all X-Plane platforms (PC, Mac and Xbox).
It is important to note that, when using a USB 3.0 bus, the usb port time-outs when the device disconnects (USB 3.0 bus specs say nothing about this) so a quick reconnect will start the USB audio device. The downside of this is that some connected devices might not be ready when you reconnect.
In general, USB audio latency is NOT an issue as the USB host driver automatically uses a very large buffer, as long as a high-speed USB bus is used. We even recommend you not to bother with the latency and use high-speed USB if you want best audio quality.
The X-Plane OSX audio kernel already has support for proper jack detection (2 different types), and comes with three of such devices pre-installed:
