6. **11. With Photoshop open, open the Artboard tool (the arrow icon to the left of the main menu bar).**

The Artboard panel shows thumbnails of all the artboards on your desktop that are available for you to use. Look for the one that has the thumbnail of the Retouch menu. The Retouch menu appears in the bottom panel in Figure 6-5.

7. **12. Select the Retouch feature called _Easy Cloning,_ and click the OK button.**

Photoshop automatically places another image in your foreground. It is not necessary to resize the cloned image, and you don’t need to specify the size of the new image (as long as the cloned image is an exact size match for the original image).

When you use Photoshop’s cloning, Retouch, or cloning feature, sometimes you see an error message that informs you that you can’t use the pixels of the original image for the new image — which is true. This is why you don’t always see the destination frame fill the area. Only a portion of the original image can be used for a clone, and that’s why you may see an error message.

That said, the functionality of the Retouch tool is similar to the cloning tools that you use in the Paint Shop Pro software or other image-manipulation software.

Photoshop provides a shortcut to the Retouch tool when you have it open and selected.

8. **13. Select Colorize (choose it from the Retouch menu or by right-clicking the original image thumbnail), as shown in** **Figure** **6-6** **.**

The original image is replaced by a color version of the image.

You can colorize (make the picture color) any image color in any combination. You can create a black-and-white image of your picture, for example, or you can create a red-and-white image of a red horse. You can even mix the two, make the picture go black-and-white with red strokes on the black areas and a rainbow pattern in the red. You can create any color you like — millions and millions of different colors.

9. **14. Click the Preview button to preview the colorized image, shown in** **Figure** **6-7** **.**

Photoshop provides your preview so that you can edit the colorized image.

If you can edit images with Photoshop Elements then you can use any other Photoshop editor later. We have tested many free and commercial Photoshop editors and good ones.

Elements 11 is officially supported on Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows 10 and macOS 10.7 through 10.14.1 or later.

This tutorial is written for Photoshop CS6 but many of these tips also work in Photoshop CC.

1. Grab the tools you need

The best free software is a good brush with ink. A simple Nik Collection Brushes set is a good start.

One of my favorite brushes is Grabby Brush from Nik Software. It contains a whopping 150 brushes. Like brushes, they can be split, combined, trimmed and even be radiated.

2. Create a new document

To edit photos, create a new document. I’ll always use a new document, but sometimes I’ll keep some or all of an image in the old document.

If you use the new Multiply layer blend mode, then you can use the old image as a base.

3. Select photos

This is where Photoshop Elements begins to shine. Select photos by using the Magic Wand tool.

You can only select one at a time (see below for more on selecting layers). Choose one photo with the Magic Wand.

4. Resize photos

Select the crop box and drag the cursor to resize the photo.

5. Open the Layers palette

Hold down the SHIFT key to see the layers. Click on the crop box to add a new layer.

6. Add a layer

Use the crop box to add a new layer to the image.

The layers are arranged in the Layers palette. You can drag and drop layers to move them around. You can make a layer just a copy of another layer, or you can make it a blend mode layer, which is layer properties that cannot be changed.

For example, you can use the burn effect to make the background look like it has a brushed metal finish (see below).

7. Apply filters

Asia’s fastest-growing economy, China, is facing a new twist in the trade dispute between the US and China. The east-central Asian nation has held its breath for several weeks, waiting to see what the Trump administration would do with its October threat to put tariffs on a $50 billion Chinese pile of manufactured goods. This week’s response from China is an unexpected one: it has suggested it is willing to retaliate after all, much more aggressively than had been expected.

After weeks of negotiating in Shanghai, both sides may be left with less than they hoped for. A public deadline in Beijing had been set for 10 October, but it was not to happen. On Tuesday, a senior US official said China could miss that target, but that there would not be tariffs on anything later than October 15.

How bad was the pain that could result from a full-scale trade war? The round of talks which kicked off with high hopes, in Shanghai, had been driven by the threat of tariffs and the spectre of a range of other punitive measures against Chinese exports. At one point, even the US president, Donald Trump, had conceded that the threat of tariffs was a poor negotiating tactic.

For a while, it seemed that China might be ready to soften. It insisted that it needed to see some further signs of the “correct” behaviour in the US before it would put its own economy at risk in standing up to American protectionism. This week, the Chinese negotiators insisted that the US should return to the negotiating table to resolve the long-running trade dispute with a better deal.

This is where things got complicated. In Beijing, the Chinese embassy had anticipated that US officials would deliver a list of economic demands at the end of the week. They had not been told that this was not going to happen. The US official said that the Chinese had claimed that the US had not pushed enough on six or seven issues.

Had the US simply agreed to China’s terms without any hard-hitting demands, in other words, it would still appear to have lost. There would be no public list of requirements, nor any explicit punishments for non-compliance – because any tariff on things like cars or agriculture would need to be negotiated with the European Union or other trading partners. The overall package for trade negotiations was designed to allow both China and the US to achieve something – but not at the expense of the other.
