￭ CTCSS (Clear to Send)
CTCSS is used in radio communications, especially in FM trunked systems, to indicate whether a channel is clear (free) or has transmitting units on it.
CTCSS is a three-bit sequence that is broadcast continuously on each control channel. The control channel has a fixed transmission rate, so the transmitted three-bit CTCSS acts as a command sent to all transmission units that may be transmitting or retransmitting on that channel.
Each two-bit subcode (a.k.a. PSK subcode) indicates the assignment of a voice channel to be used for transmission by a transmission unit; each three-bit combination (a.k.a. CTCSS) indicates the assigned voice channel.
Each subcode has a unique three-bit code.
CTCSS transmission is also used on some simplex voice channels.
CTCSS indications on the voice channels are referred to as indication tones, or tone indications.
Tone indications are usually heard as click sounds, with some warning and alert tones. The transmission of CTCSS itself does not include the indication tone.
